Government Island
Stafford, VA
A historical quarry site notorious for its Aquia sandstone used in the construction of the U.S Capitol, Whitehouse, and other building in and around Washington, DC.
Now, it is a 17-acre scenic nature preserve and archaeological site. It has a boardwalk and 1.5-mile trail (the first two trail segments are handicap accessible), and interpretive signs to learn about the history.
